Katie Couric didn't mean to offend Kim Kardashian when she questioned why the reality-TV star was famous.

So says the talk show host, who is seeking to clarify the remarks she made that prompted Kim to caption a photo of Couric's baby gift for her and Kanye West with the hashtags "#IHateFakeMediaFriends#MayIHumblySuggestYouNotSendGiftsThenTalkS--t."

"I've met Kim before and I think she's a really sweet person," Couric said in a statement to E! News.

"I was responding to a reporter's question, and explaining how I'm intrigued by the public's fascination with her family. I didn't mean to hurt her feelings. The gift is genuine, and I'm happy for Kim and Kanye."

Couric had told In Touch Weekly, referring to the Kardashian family, "I don't understand—why are they so famous?"

Khloé Kardashian Odom had applauded Kim's fierce Instagram post earlier today, tweeting, "God I love this new side of u!"
