It may not be the ideal birthday celebration for some, but Emma Watson was happy.

The English actress turned 24 today, and while most people would plan an elaborate event or some festive get-together with their pals, Watson spend her day working on her new film in Toronto.

Emma was filming a church scene with a few of the actors the upcoming flick Regression, a source tells E! News. She arrived to set around 1 p.m. and filmed a few scenes, including a few with her co-star Ethan Hawke, which will be shot tonight.

"First day shooting Regression today - a very cool birthday present xx," the star tweeted today.

However, the fashionista did get a little bit of time away from set during her special day to celebrate with a friend.

During her long break, Emma was able to have dinner with a pal, the source tells us, but wasn't able to identify who it was. Watson visited Olivetree Deli Café, where she seemed to be in a really good mood.

Eyewitness states, "She seemed very happy, she had a big smile on her face." The restaurant closed just after they left. We're told Emma didn't receive any gifts while on set, but she did get a sweet collage of all her movie roles from a fan on Twitter.

"more to come : )," Emma wrote back.
