Instead, the 28-year-old Fury actor spent the night in jail after he was arrested and charged with criminal trespass, harassment and disorderly conduct earlier that evening. While seeing Broadway's Cabaret, he became disorderly during the show's first act. During intermission, LaBeouf was escorted out of Studio 54. The troubled yet talented star was reportedly in tears after he was handcuffed outside the venue.
LaBeouf's rep has yet to comment on the star's arrest. In the meantime, several stars—including Lena Dunham, Billy Eichner and Ana Gasteyer—seized the opportunity to make fun of the actor via Twitter.
"I feel you Shia: In 1993 I was carried out of Les Mis screaming because I couldn't handle the intimations of death," Dunham told her 1.62 million followers. She also tweeted, "Seriously feel awful for the performers and am sorry to contribute to celebrity takedown culture but this is the best current event we have!"
Dunham even tweeted a quote from Girls newcomer Gillian Jacobs: "You know you're a f--kin' G when you're arrested during Cabaret." The ex-Community star did not tweet about LaBeouf herself, however.
This isn't the first time Dunham has publicly criticized LaBeouf's behavior. The Golden Globe winner jokingly chastised the actor after he apologized for plagiarizing people in January. She later told Vanity Fair that her tweet about the former Even Stevens star, in which she cheekily called him her "7th grade boyfriend," was intended as "a joke." The TV star then clarified, "I thought I was, like, making a sort of a veiled reference that my friends might enjoy, slash subtly flirting. I mean, I'm not trying to get with Shia LaBeouf. I was just being a little cheeky, and now we're supposedly in a feud? I'm not sure, but I have to admit I felt like a real idiot. I was, like, I have no sense of how anything will enter the world."
Eichner, who found fame via Funny or Die, also poked fun at LaBeouf's bad boy behavior. "Shia LaBeouf - do what you want to Alan Cumming but if you lay even one finger on the Newsies I will kill you!!!!!" he joked. He also tweeted, "Shia LaBeouf was arrested at the Broadway production of Cabaret so I finally feel comfortable telling you I was waterboarded at Kinky Boots." The jokes didn't stop there, however.
"I guarantee you there were at least 3 middle aged women at tonight's performance of Cabaret talking more during the show than Shia," Eichner told his 195,000 Twitter followers late Thursday night.
Gasteyer, a Saturday Night Live veteran who most recently starred in the ABC sitcom Suburgatory, took a lighter approach with her tweet. "Maybe Cabaret Act 2 was just gonna be too dark for Shia and he was trying to cover," the funnywoman told her 100,000 followers. "I mean it does get real heavy." Stylist Stacy London also took aim at another troubled star, asking, "Is Shia LaBeouf the new Amanda Bynes?"
Jon Bernthal, who co-stars with LaBeouf in the WWII epic Fury, offered his support instead of trying to get a cheap laugh at the actor's expense. "Hang in there homie," he tweeted. "Get through it. Big love."
