Bilbo Baggins is this much closer to being there and back again.

The first teaser trailer for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, the sure-to-be-epic conclusion of Peter Jackson's second Middle-earth trilogy, was released today, tweeted out by the film's account and promptly retweeted by Gandalf himself, Ian McKellen.

And what can we possibly say about the 1-minute, 57-second sneak peek? The battle sequences look unbelievable; Evangeline LillyCate Blanchett and Orlando Bloom make for a beautiful trio of elves; Gandalf the Grey is one of the more reassuring presences ever to grace the big screen; Luke Evans' Bard is as commanding as ever; and it's so nice to see Martin Freeman back in Bilbo mode after having had extremely mixed feelings about him in Fargo.

Freeman and McKellen were the notable missing presences at the film's Comic-Con 2014 presentation over the weekend—but Stephen Colbert, dressed in full hobbit regalia, moderating a panel that included Jackson, Lilly, Bloom, Blanchett, Evans, Elijah Wood, Benedict Cumberbatch, Andy Serkis and Lee Pace certainly helped mitigate the situation.

Let's just say, swoon-times-9.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies swoops into theaters in 3-D and IMAX on Dec. 17, the perfect multifaceted package to unwrap for the holidays.
