We're not going to sugarcoat it—there have been some serious crimes against fashion committed at Emmys in the past. What we're about to show you should never, ever be attempted at home.

With the 2014 Emmy Awards just around the corner, let's take a look back at some of the worst fashion offenders, shall we?

Wearing a scantily clad sheet gown, former Playboy model Tess Smith showed more than a sliver of skin at the 2005 Emmys. One gust of wind, and there might have been a lot more than just her belly ring on display. Too bad Barbara Streisand wasn't around to help a girl out, because her velvety pink cloak from the 2004 awards show had more than enough fabric.

Then there's Paula Abdul, who quite literally dressed for success by imitating the show's coveted trophy with this head-to-toe gold gown in 2013. And we sincerely hope that Phoebe Price confused the 2008 Emmys with a costume party, because there is no excuse for this red, sheer new-age-flapper ensemble.

We get it; Cyndi Lauper is famous for her crazy '80s outfits. And we love that about her. But her '80s-inspire black and gold ensemble happened in the '90s. Also, we're deducting points for her black-and-yellow hair matching her outfit.
