Joan Rivers worked tirelessly to be able to live the life that she wanted, on her own terms.

So of course the comedic icon and host of E!'s Fashion Police was draped in diamonds and fur, as befitting the entertainment royalty that she was, for what W magazine says was the star's final photo shoot.

Rivers is remembered in W's October 2014 "Royals Issue" as—what else?—the "Queen of Comedy" and the magazine has shared a portrait of Joan, who passed away on Sept. 4, from that last portfolio.

The glamorous black and white portrait was shot by photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, and Joan also talked with the mag's Lynn Hirschberg.

"I've always been an outsider, and that's OK," said the pioneering comedian, who also invented the modern-day red carpet interview when she started asking the question of all the celebrities: "Who are you wearing"?

Rivers continued, chuckling at the memory: "I've never been invited to the White House. I've never been given awards. I've never been to the inside of anything. My maid was invited to the Vanity Fair Oscar party, and she asked if she could borrow a wrap! My comedy has made me a total outsider, but that is what has kept me sharp all these years. To be relevant, you have to be an outsider."

And yet she was so loved by so many, even by the celebs she enjoyed raking over the coals for their faulty fashion choices.

This Friday, Sept. 19, tune into E! for "Joan Day," an all-day Fashion Police marathon, culminating in the 90-minute special, Fashion Police: Celebrating Joan, at 8/7 c, during which Melissa Rivers will remember her iconic mom alongside Giuliana Rancic, Kelly Osbourne and George Kotsiopoulos.
