Watch: Liam Neeson Tackles Alcoholism in "Tombstones"

Liam Neeson's role in Among the Tombstones may be a slight case of real life mirroring the big screen.

The actor, who recently spoke about his sobriety in an interview with GQ magazine earlier this year, plays a recovering alcoholic and former detective for the NYPD.

E! News caught up with Neeson at the premiere of the flick earlier this week, where we asked how it was to step into the mind of such a troubled character.

"It's almost the opposite of Taken, the character is almost the opposite, he's got a very dark interior and he's very unsure of himself. He's working on inner demons from when he was an NYPD cop," Neeson explains on the red carpet.

"And he's scared. He's scared of life but there's still a semblance of a moral dignity there and he's determined to try and do the right thing, to redeem himself."

Neeson also spoke about how important it is to address alcoholism in a realistic, gritty light—like the film does—and shared that "the great work that AA does" should also be highlighted on a grand scale.

In his interview with GQ, Neeson admitted that he was "drinking too much" after his wife, Natasha Richardson, passed away in 2009.

"I gave up the Guinness years ago, because it just—past an age, it sticks to you, you know? So last year, I just thought—they've been throwing these action movies at me, and I thought, 'Okay, let's just change it a little bit.' And it's been great. I love it."
