Talk about surprise BFFs!

When Alan Cumming appeared on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live Thursday, the Good Wife actor, 49, explained how he forged an unlikely friendship with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

"We met at a party about 16 years ago, at this Marie Claire party. They'd done a thing about her and I'd done an article for [it]," he recalled. "We were at the same table, we went out for dinner, and we just stayed friends. And she is really one of the kindest most loyal, loving, tender, funny girls I've ever known. I think she's really one of my best friends. She's been at my wedding. She knows my family. She's lovely."

Lewinsky, 41, returned to the spotlight earlier this year when she wrote an essay about what her life has been like after her affair with United States President Bill Clinton. Since then, she has become a Vanity Fair contributor, joined Twitter and gave a speech at the Forbes 30 Under 30 Summit in Philadelphia.

According to Cumming, Lewinsky wanted to take back control of her life. "I think what's prompted her to come back into the public eye is she just realized that her life is so difficult," the Cabaret star said. "For her to move on from this thing, and to actually try and hide and not be in the world was so difficult."

Cumming recently raved about Lewinsky's "lovely" personality to The New York Daily News while he was promoting his new memoir, Not My Father's Son. "She's absolutely one of the most loving, fun, clever, tender people," the actor gushed. "The fact that she's been able to remain such an amazing person with all that horrible bile that was heaped upon her as a young woman is testament to the person she is."

Lewinsky is equally supportive of Cumming and his career. In a recent New York Times profile on the actor, for example, it was revealed that she is a regular guest at Cumming's dressing room on Broadway.
