Alison Sweeney understands that to have starred on a soap opera means to be loved by some, hated by others and loved-to-be-hated by all the rest.

The actress and longtime host of The Biggest Loser announced in January that she would be leaving Days of Our Lives this season after 21 years of playing Sami Brady on the daytime drama.

And, gulp, her final episode aired today and Sweeney, who wrapped her last scenes in May, signed off for good with a lot of memories in her mental scrapbook.

Earlier this week a mega-fan posted a video mashup showing Sami/Sweeney's changing looks through the years, from early '90s-prep, big-haired mean girl to her more modern look of today, interspersed with Sweeney's own recollections about getting the role and the day her own life changed for good.

"I never imagined in a million years today that I would be sitting here, 21 years later," she said. "I had no idea what was in store for me, but I remember wanting to play a villain."

And boy did she.

"It would be awesome to have some kind of happy ending, but then, I also think Sami probably deserves some sort of very twisted, like, Breaking Bad ending," Sweeney said on Ellen in January.

While she may not have slowly slipped away to the sounds of "Baby Blue," Sweeney shared a long farewell letter to Days of Our Lives fans on social media today after her last episode.

"Whether it was ‪#‎Ejami‬, ‪#‎Lumi‬, ‪#‎Safe‬, ‪#‎Kami‬or ... ‪#‎Sole‬, or somewhere in between, whether I personally liked the story or not, I did my best to keep Sami true to herself, and played every scene as honestly as I could," the now 39-year-old mother of two wrote in her lengthy post. "I look back through all of it, and am proud of what I accomplished. Proud of the memories, the hard work and the fun times. I'm proud of who I've become as a result of my 21 years in Salem."

"No question - I am ‪#‎teamSami‬. I have always rooted for her… to finally stop putting her foot in her mouth, being her own worst enemy, eternally needing her parents approval, oh, this list could go on and on," Sweeney continud. "It's impossible to miss Sami's faults. But I loved her more for them. And I loved playing her faults and her character flaws as much I loved playing the scenes when she persevered! And now it's been only 5 months since I've stopped getting scripts in the mail, and I MISS HER. I miss Sami, her insecurities and her agendas. I miss my friends in the cast and crew who are as close as family to me. And now that you've shared with my Sami's final goodbyes, I will miss all of you."
