Sherlock fans, you better hold on to your deerstalker caps because Mark Gatiss, Sherlock co-creator and the actor behind Mycroft Holmes, does not have good news for you. Or maybe it is good news if you like having your heart ripped out of your chest by a TV show. Ready?

In the new season of the Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman series, "You can always expect tragedy as well as adventure, that's just how it goes," Gatiss told RadioTimes.com.

Adventure! :) Tragedy! :(

Whatever, we're just happy to be getting more adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. For fans expecting Mary (Amanda Abbington) to bite the bullet, well, don't. Just because it happens in the original Sherlock Holmes lore doesn't mean it will happen just yet.

"It should be clear by now that while, of course, [Sir Arthur Conan] Doyle is our absolute god, we have gone quite a long way away as well—we've introduced Sherlock and Mycroft's parents [for instance], I don't think they've ever been seen in any adaptation – so there are lots of surprises to come," Gatiss said.

Sherlock is returning with new episodes and a special in 2015. Production is slated to begin on the special earlier in the year with the new episodes scheduled to air in 2016. "A special, plus a new series of three episodes—it's a record-breaking run! Of course, it's far too early to say what's coming, but we're reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John, is the very last thing you'd expect..." co-creator Steven Moffat said in a statement when the new episodes were announced.

If you're having withdrawals, just pick up any magazine to find Cumberbatch's face looking back at you or catch him on the big screen in The Imitation Game. Meanwhile, Freeman can be seen in The Hobbit and will host Saturday Night Live for the first time on December 13 with musical guest Charli XCX.
