The nominations for the 87th annual Academy Awards were announced Thursday, and if we've learned anything, we've learned that just because you received a Golden Globe nomination (or even took one home!), that doesn't mean you're getting an Oscar nom.
Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel lead the pack with nine nominations each. It's quite the day for comedy (albeit dark comedy).
American Sniper is getting recognized after being completely snubbed at the Golden Globes. While the Bradley Cooper-starring film was lauded in several categories, there were other movies and actors that were completely overlooked!
We're going to take a closer look at what didn't quite make the cut for the Academy.
Ava DuVernay's Selma is facing the brunt of the Oscars snubs. Although it is nominated for Best Original Song and Best Picture, DuVernay failed to receive the Best Director nomination while David Oyeolowo also didn't receive any kudos from the Academy. Huge surprise considering both earned major nods at the Golden Globes.
Amy Adams took home a trophy for Best Actress at the Golden Globes, but didn't receive any love from the Academy for Big Eyes. The film didn't earn any nominations at this year's Oscars. Emily Blunt is in a similar boat, having received a nomination at the Globes but getting snubbed at the Oscars.
Although she was nominated for Best Actress at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards, Jennifer Aniston sadly didn't make the cut in the category at this year's Oscars. Some speculate that Marion Cotillard took her spot, but who knows the method behind the madness?
If you want to see the silver lining for Jen, Angelina Jolie was snubbed at both the Golden Globes AND this year's Oscars! The Unbroken director didn't receive any nominations in the best picture or best director category, but her film did earn nominations for Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. Jolie received zero nominations at the Golden Globes.
Adding to our shock is Wild! The film failed to receive a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay or Best Picture, but Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern nabbed the nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively. The HFPA also didn't give Wild a Best Picture nomination at the Golden Globes.
Christopher Nolan's sci-fi flick, Interstellar, didn't receive any major nominations, which, as a Nolan film, is surprising in and of itself. But the space saga did manage to earn some nominations in the Visual Effects categories and Best Original Score categories.
Jake Gyllenhaal earned both SAG nominations and a nod at the Golden Globes, but didn't receive any love for his role in Nightcrawler, which is definitely up there with the biggest surprises!
And despite being nominated for Best Picture, Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl also failed to receive a nomination in the Best Adapted Screenplay category.
But the real sleeper pick here is Whiplash. The Golden Globes awarded J.K. Simmons with Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture, but that was pretty much it for the Miles Teller film. This time around, the Academy nominated it in five categories including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay!
Sadly, one of our favorite animated films, The Lego Movie, was completely overlooked and while we're upset, the people behind it are more so. We guess everything isn't so awesome...(although the song is nomimated.)
