The Narbonne High School girls' basketball team was at the center of some controversy this week after they were disqualified from the playoffs for wearing breast cancer awareness colors on their jerseys (doing so violates league uniform rules). Although they won their game on Saturday 57-52, they were forced to forfeit for not getting approval to wear the pink uniforms.
"Breast cancer awareness is in October, and there's a process for [the school] to request color change," league commissioner John Aguirre said (according to the L.A. Times). "If they're going to blatantly disregard these rules and regulations, they're going to affect kids."
Needless to say, many were outraged by the ruling.
Fast forward to today: a three-person panel ruled that the Narbonne girls' basketball team will be allowed to play in this Saturday's Los Angeles City Section championship game. However, their coach, Victoria Sanders, has been suspended for the rest of the season.
"In the spirit of the game and for the kids, the appeals committee has decided to grant Narbonne's request for reinstatement," Aguirre said in a statement to The New York Times.
