Why Everyone Needs to Calm Down About Rebel Wilson's Age Controversy

It's time to calm down on the controversy.

We have exactly two words for the Rebel Wilson age controversy: Who cares?

Much has been made of the speculation over the Pitch Perfect 2 actresses' age, and to be blunt, it feels like a complete waste of time. This all started when the Australian tabloid Woman's Day printed a story claiming that Wilson has been lying about her age, as well as things like her real name and parts of her upbringing. The comedian was previously thought to be 29, but the WD article accused (yes, accused) her of being 36 (the horror!).

After the article started to pick up steam online, Wilson took to Twitter to mock the story and the controversy surrounding it, making jokes about being a 100-year-old mermaid. It seemed like that would be the last of all the nonsense, but the speculation just won't die.

Today, People and the Sydney Morning Herald, among others, published what they claim to be Rebel Wilson's real and true age: 35. The actress hasn't yet responded to these new stories, but we sincerely hope she won't even bother. After all, last we checked there wasn't much difference—physically or emotionally—between 29-year-olds and 35-year-olds. Sure, maybe it was a little silly to expect to successfully cover up her true age in today's world of Internet hackers and people who care way too much, but isn't revealing her age each woman's choice to make?

And we can hardly blame her for wanting to come off as younger in the eyes of Hollywood execs. The industry hasn't exactly made it easy for actresses to feel comfortable with growing older. When you're forced to squeeze yourself into so many unrealistic boxes (fashion sense, hair and makeup, body image...we could go on and on) it's only natural to want to alter the one attribute that you can actually control. Or, as Amy Schumer would put it, maybe she's just trying to put off her inevitable Last F--kable Day.

Think about it: Would anyone be worrying (or writing, period) about this issue if Rebel Wilson was a man? When was the last time that a male actor's age even came into serious conversation? Fans and the industry alike give the same amount of crushability to both Chris Pratt and George Clooney, despite a solid 20-year difference.

There's also the fact that Wilson is hardly the first actress to play coy in the birthday department. Everyone from Nicki Minaj to J.Lo has been outed for fibbing about the number of candles on her cake. Jessica Chastain's age is famously ambiguous, as she told The Independent that she would never admit her real age. Even the great Sandra Bullock has felt forced to fib, saying once "After a while, you have no idea how old you are because you've lied so many times...I always said I would never lie, but one time, when I didn't it worked against me. So I figure you just keep them guessing."

And if there's one thing Rebel Wilson does, it's keep us guessing. Keep on keepin' on, Rebel.
