But while the pairing may seem rather random, the two have actually known each other for quite some time.
The 45-year-old SpaceX CEO first met the 30-year-old actress while filming Robert Rodriguez's 2013 Machete Kills. E! News can confirm that, while they never had a scene together, Musk became interested in Heard and courted her for a friendship via email.
The Hollywood Reporter initially reported the story, saying Musk became "infatuated" with Heard and began emailing Rodriguez and his team to set up dinners and lunches with the actress.
In one of the emails, Musk wrote, "If there is a party or event with Amber, I'd be interested in meeting her just out of curiosity. Allegedly, she is a fan of George Orwell and Ayn Rand … most unusual."
Rodriguez and his team eventually made dinner plans, but Heard—who was dating Depp at the time—didn't show up. However, this did not stop Musk, who decided to try again.
"Can you send her a note saying I would like to get together for lunch in LA?" he sent another email to Rodriguez's team. "Am not angling for a date. I know she's in a long-term relationship, but … Amber just seems like an interesting person to meet."
E! News has learned Musk and Heard did end up hanging out a few times, along with Depp. They connected over their involvement with Art of Elysium, which works to improve lives and effect social change via more exposure to the arts.
Fast forward a few years and both Musk and Heard find themselves relating on another level: they're both going through a divorce.
Heard and Depp settled their split last week, while Musk and his former wife Talulah Riley divorced for the second time on New Year's Eve.
Since then, Musk and Heard have been spotted together on several occasions.
They were together at the Delano South Beach hotel in Miami Beach last month, and when Heard headed to London at the end of July to film Justice League, Musk jetted to London, too.
In fact, they spent a night partying with the Suicide Squad cast at hot spot The Box. People reported that Heard and Musk arrived at the club together and, according to the Daily Mail, Musk, Heard, Cara Delevingne and Jared Leto were all spotted leaving at the same time.
Still, Multiple sources have told E! News that the pair are just "hanging out" as friends.
