JUNOs 2009: Best & Worst

Dallas Green Stuart Davis / Vancouver Sun

Canada has a bit of a love/hate relationship with the Juno Awards. Some of us love them. Some of us hate them. And some of us love to hate them...yet we tune in all the same. Last night had its highs and lows. Here are our picks for the Best and Worst of the 2009 Junos:

Best dressed lady: Kreesha Turner turned heads in a purple Carlie Wong-designed gown that showcased her spectacular...clavicles.

Worst dressed lady: Chantal Kreviazuk's unfortunate and extremely unflattering white dress made her look like an escapee from a Victorian insane asylum.

Best dressed dude/s: The boys of Hedley looked slick in matching white Armani jackets with black detailing. We would like them to take us to prom.

Worst dressed dude: The Sam Roberts band member who felt it acceptable to purchase his ensemble at the Cancun airport gift shop.

Best couple: Elvis Costello and Diana Krall, holding hands and looking effortlessly hip.

Worst couple: Russell Peters shamelessly pawing at Divine Brown (who was a very good sport about it). Hey, it's not sexual harassment if it's televised!

Best live performance: The gorgeous harmonizing of Kathleen Edwards and Bryan Adams. Veterans and class acts, both. Bryan's messing things up with a chuckle made the dynamic duo all the more endearing.

Worst live performance: Nickelback's show-opening performance made us want to put something in Chad Kroeger's mouth. Specifically, a wet sock.

Best hair: Serena Ryder's long layered locks smack of "business up front, party in the back" but if this mullet was wrong, we don't want to be right.

Worst hair: Theo Tams' 90 degree angle faux-hawk horrifically defying the law of gravity.

Best joke of the night: Handsome rake Michael Buble taking Russell Peters down a peg:

"Knock, knock,
Who's there?
Brown people. Now give me a million dollars."

Worst joke of the night: Nickelback winning Group of the Year.

Best award: We don't know very much about this Lights chick, but she seemed ecstatically happy to win. We kind of want to hug her and be her friend.

Worst award: The Stills (who I interviewed at the peak of their success way back in 2004, for the record) winning Best New Group of the Year. Stay tuned next year when those fresh-faced Barenaked Ladies win same!
