Summertime, and the living is definitely not easy in Jon & Kate land.

Temperatures boiled over last night, as police were called to break up a quarrel between reality mavens Jon and Kate Gosselin at the estranged couple's home in Wernersville, Pa., E! News has confirmed.

"We responded for an argument, but no police action was taken," says a spokesman for the Wernersville Police Department.

And the drama was definitely upped, police and witnesses tell E! News. Read on for the details...

Things got testy when Kate, fresh off her New York media blitz, appeared unannounced at the home around 7 p.m. to visit her brood.

However, according to one witness, Jon refused to let her in because it wasn't her time to spend with the Plus 8.

"They were screaming at each other," the source says. "He refused to open the gate."

Apparently she was also irked by the presence of Stephanie Santoro, the 23-year-old babysitter/cocktail waitress hired by Jon.

The resulting hysterics prompted a bystander to call 911. Police have not released the name of the caller or a recording of the call.

Once cops showed, Kate calmed down and was escorted off the property. She was still red-eyed, though, when she checked into a Days Inn in nearby Reading. (She relocated later Thursday to the more posh Homewood Suites.)

There's been no comment from the former fun couple, but we'll double-check with Jon's current steady, Hailey Glassman, when she stops by Monday for some exclusive E! News interview time at 7 and 10 p.m.
