UPDATE: A statement on Sum 41's Facebook page reads: "After an MRI scan, it appears Deryck has slipped a disc in his back once again. Despite doctor's instructions, he has decided to play today's show at Summersonic regardless."

Here's hoping Deryck Whibley doesn't become a casualty of society.

The Sum 41 frontman and ex-husband of Avril Lavigne was hospitalized in Japan after three people attacked him in a bar late last night, according to his bandmates, who tweeted the news earlier Friday.

There's no word on the extent of his injuries, only that he's "unfortunately still in the hospital" and his pals are "waiting for results and hoping for the best."

Japanese police are said to be investigating what went down.

"Thanks for your support," concluded a statement on the band's website.

They were supposed to play the Summer Sonic Festival this weekend in Osaka and Tokyo.

This has not been Whibley's week. Sum 41 was also forced to cancel three Warped Tour appearances this week after their singer came down with a severe case of bronchitis that threatened to damage his voice "permanently," according to the band.
