The actor, who played deranged headmaster Ed Rooney in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, pleaded guilty today to one felony count of failing to update his California sex-offender registration, E! News has learned.
Pucker up, butter-cup.
As a result of his slip-up, according to Los Angeles D.A. spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons, Jones was sentenced to three years' formal probation and is required to perform 250 hours of community service, most likely picking up trash along roadways.
"He'll be making freeway pumpkins," said Gibbons, referring to the bright orange garbage bags used by cleanup crews.
It's a dirty job but at least the actor managed to avoid what could have been a three-year stint in a state prison.
Rooney, er, Jones got into this mess back in 2003, after he pleaded no contest to hiring a 14-year-old boy for an X-rated photo shoot. He was ordered to register, underwent counseling and completed five years' probation. But California law requires him to annually inform authorities of his whereabouts within five days of his birthday, which is Sept. 28, something he failed to do last year.
Speaking of which, Jones turns 64 today. Happy Birthday, Jeffrey.
