Review: Taking Woodstock Trips on Itself
Far out? Far from it. Based on the memoirs of Elliot Tiber, this comedy stars The Daily Show's Demetri Martin as Elliot, who inadvertently helps organize the landmark hippie concert. Though intermittently amusing and exhilarating, Taking Woodstock can't quite pull together its threads into one totally trippy tapestry.
Review: The Proposal Works, but Not Without a Hitch
Review in a Hurry: Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds get naked. Need any other reason to see this cinematic matrimony of The Devil Wears Prada and Meet the Parents? Sweet, silly Proposal practically gets on bended knee and begs you to engage, so you might as well say "I do."
Review: Quirky Grifters Can't Score in The Brothers Bloom
Review in a Hurry: Imagine Dirty Rotten Scoundrels aboard The Darjeeling Limited, and you've pretty much got the idea. This labored quirkapalooza about fraternal grifters planning One Last Con, natch, has moments of charm but fails to pull off its narrative sleight of hand.
Monsters vs. Aliens: All-Star, Gee-Whiz Fun—in 3-D!
Review in a Hurry: In this freaky, fun but formulaic smackdown, the U.S. army uses sci-fi mutants to battle ETs intent on invading our planet. The bigger-than-life concept, out-of-this-world voice cast (led by Reese Witherspon) and eye-gouging 3-D visuals make MvA worth attacking.
Julia and Clive Shine in Twisty, Sexy Duplicity
Review in a Hurry: Julia Roberts and Clive Owen power-suit up for a high-stakes game of corporate espionage. But is it spy vs. spy or spy hearts spy? A slick but somewhat convoluted crime caper, Duplicity practically glows from all the high-wattage power of its incandescent stars.
Jonas Brothers Lightweights on the Big Screen
Review in a Hurry: OMG, the Jonas Brothers in 3-D! The promise-ring-wearing hotties—Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas—try to burn down the house, but their Burning Up tour makes for a tepid rock doc. Still, fevered tweens will scream themselves silly.
He's Just Not That Into You? We're (Only Kinda) Into It
Review in a Hurry: Another vapid rom-com for Valentine's Day? Not exactly. This star-studded adaptation of the best-seller attempts to be a dating/relationship guide of sorts—in movie form! Sometimes shooting from the hip, sometimes aiming for the heart, HJNTIY—like a nearsighted Cupid—hits and misses.
Taken
Review in a Hurry: Liam Neeson proves that he's a total badass. As an ex-spy, he shoots, kicks and karate-chops his way through Paris to rescue his kidnapped daughter. But even he can't knock sense into this silly action-thriller.
Inkheart
Review in a Hurry: Based on the best-selling novel, this family adventure casts Brendan Fraser as a hero dad (again!) who can bring mythological characters to life. While the story proves the pen is mightier than the sword, this flaccid adaptation proves the book is mightier than the film.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop
Review in a Hurry: Think Die Hard in a mall. An ineffectual security guard (Kevin James) must save the day when thieves raid the megaplex and take hostages. Not a bad premise, but most of the comedy just dies. Hard.
Notorious
Review in a Hurry: If you're expecting a remake of Hitchcock's classic of the same name, then you're in for a big, er B.I.G. surprise. And a pleasant one, 'cause this rapper flick is for real.
Marley & Me
Review in a Hurry: Sure, the golden Lab is cute. And golden couple Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson are cute. But the Marley story, based on John Grogan's memoir about family life with an unruly mutt, has about as much traction as a puppy on a linoleum floor.
