Roman Polanksi Granted Bail but Still in Jail

Sorry, Kirstie Alley. It seems the Free Roman Polanski Brigade has won out. Or has it?

A Swiss court today accepted the Oscar-winning filmmaker's $4.5 million cash bail deal that would allow him to leave a Zurich jail for house arrest and electronic monitoring at his Swiss Chalet.

Naturally, Swiss authorities aren't so keen on the idea of letting their prize catch go, given his history of running from the law. Two previous requests by his attorneys were rejected outright.

This time, however, the price was right. But the 72-year-old won't be getting his Thanksgiving yet. The Justice Ministry says it will continue to keep The Pianist director in lock-up until deciding whether to appeal the bail decision to Switzerland's highest court—officials have 10 days to decide whether to challenge his release.

Lil Wayne Heading to Jail for Gun Rap

Lil Wayne's heading to the big house.

The "Hot Revolver" rapper struck a deal with Manhattan prosecutors and pleaded guilty today to attempted weapons possession in exchange for a one-year prison sentence, a spokeswoman for the Manhattan District Attorney's Office confirmed to E! News.

The 27-year-old Grammy winner, aka Dwayne Carter III, appeared before Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Charles Solomon and copped to a felony count of attempted criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree. Hizzoner allowed the New Orleans MC to remain free on his current $30,000 bond but ordered him to surrender his passport.

No comment yet from Team Wayne. (Maybe he can ring up incarcerated pal T.I. and ask for some pointers?)

Roman Polanski Just Gets Less and Less Appealing

That's strike two.

For the second time since his controversial bust last month, a Swiss court has denied director Roman Polanski bail, deeming the 76-year-old auteur a high flight risk and ruling that he will remain in jail ahead of his possible extradition to the United States.

In handing down her trilingual ruling, Swiss Federal Criminal Court Judge Cornelia Cova this morning also rejected any number of alternative proposals from Polanski's team, among them allowing the director to post bail or be placed under house arrest at his chalet in Gstaad.

You know what they say: Don't do the crime if you can't do the luxury resort-accommodated time...

Richard Hatch Once Again Free to Spout Nonsense on Morning TV

Richard Hatch AP Photo/Steven Senne

Did jail turn Richard Hatch straight? Following his own impeccable logic, it seems the only plausible reason why authorities in Bourne, Mass., released him early this morning.

Well, either that or his 51-month sentence for not reporting his Survivor bounty to Uncle Sam was finally up.

Either way, the nude-loving reality star was released from the Barnstable County Jail around 6 a.m. this morning, at which time he was taken to his home in Rhode Island (where, incidentally, he was serving out his previous home confinement before a morning chat with Matt Lauer landed him back behind bars).

The 48-year-old was placed on three years' supervised release, was ordered to complete a mental health program and will not be allowed to leave the tiny state without permission.

While he's now a free man, neither us nor the courts have yet to hear the last from him.

Hatch is continuing the fight to overturn his conviction on the grounds that prosecutors failed to properly poll jurors on their feelings about people's sexual orientation, and believes misconduct and discrimination—and not, you know, his blatant disregard for the IRS—had a role in his conviction. He's been representing himself and this week was told he would need to seek additional legal counsel if he wanted to continue his bid.

Housewife of Atlanta Pal: Kandi Staying "Strong" Since Ex-Fiancé's Death

More from Marc Malkin

We're happy to report that Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kandi Burruss is holding up OK these days.

As most know, the 33-year-old's former fiancé, Ashley "A.J." Jewelldied earlier this month following a fight outside an Atlanta-area strip club. His funeral was held on Friday in Georgia.

"She's doing much better," Burruss' former Xscape bandmate and close pal Tameka "Tiny" Cottle told us last night at Philippe West Hollywood for the celebration of Kobe Bryant's L'Uomo Vogue cover. "She's a strong girl."

"I speak to her every day," she said "I go and visit her. I went to the funeral. Whenever she needs me, I'm there."

But Cottle has some drama of her own, in the form of her baby-daddy, rapper Clifford "T.I." Harris.

No Bail for Roman Polanski

Roman Polanski AP Photo/Roberto Pfeil

For once in his tumultuous life, Roman Polanski isn't going anywhere.

Neither the lobbying of his own legal team or some A-list Hollywood types could convince the Swiss Justice Ministry to release the Oscar-winning filmmaker from a Zurich jail. Officials declined to free Polanski in a ruling today, one week after Polanski was apprehended on an international warrant stemming from a 31-year-old statutory rape conviction.

Now Polanski will have to sweat it out behind bars as his legal team battles in a separate court to prevent his extradition back to California. No word yet when that hearing will happen, but it's expected by the end of the month.

The decision not to let him out on bail or house arrest was made after the government deemed the Polish-born Polanski to be a high flight risk.

No doubt Kirstie Alley would agree.

Erin Andrews "Deeply Grateful" for Arrest in Nude Video Nightmare

Erin Andrews John Shearer/Getty Images

Erin Andrews has made good on her promise.

After swearing vengence on her nude-tape perpetrator during an August appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, the ESPN star is celebrating the arrest of 48-year-old Michael David Barrett—the man the FBI says was behind her voyeuristic video.

Barrett was arrested Friday on a charge of interstate stalking for allegedly surreptitiously shooting a naked Andrews parading around her hotel room and then trying to sell the tape.

In a statement today, Andrews gave thanks to "ESPN for its support during this difficult time" and vowed to become the postergirl against such crimes.

"I hope that today's action will help the countless others who have been similarly victimized...I will make every effort to strengthen the laws on a state and federal level to better protect victims of criminal stalking. I am also grateful to those who have expressed their concerns and good wishes for my family and me."

Her lawyers said that the arrest "is a welcome step in bringing this investigation to a successful close...It is now clear that she was the victim of stalking and invasion of privacy at more than one location. She was not a random victim. She was targeted and violated."

Barrett is due for his first court appearance today in Chicago.

Pulp Fiction Oscar Winner Sentenced to Jail for Fatal DUI

Pulp Fiction, Roger Avary Miramax Films, Jeffrey Mayer/Getty Images

He won't be walking the Earth like Caine in Kung Fu anytime soon.

Roger Avary, the screenwriter who nabbed an Academy Award cowriting Pulp Fiction with Quentin Tarantino, has been sentenced to a year in jail stemming from a fatal 2008 drunken-driving accident that took the life of a friend.

Ventura County Superior Court Judge Edward Bordie also gave Avary five years' probation and ordered him to enroll in a DUI education program. Bordie justified the relatively light punishment by stating that 44-year-old filmmaker had shown remorse and had no criminal background.

After initially pleading innocent last December, Avary changed his mind and pleaded guilty Aug. 18 to gross vehicular manslaughter and drunken driving.

According to police, he was driving over 100 mph when he lost control of his Mercedes and slammed into a telephone pole. The crash killed his passenger, Andreas Zini, a friend visiting from Italy. Avary's wife was ejected from the car and sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Where was the Wolf when he needed him?

Avary also penned 2006's Silent Hill and 2007's Beowulf, and directed 1994's Killing Zoe.

Another Lindsay Burglary Suspect Turns Herself In

Lindsay Lohan Fame Pictures

Two down, one to go.

Following the arrest of alleged Lindsay Lohan-Audrina Patridge burglar Nicolas Prugo last week, E! News has learned that the second of three reported thieves has turned herself over to authorities.

A source close to Rachel Lee, one of the two-young women allegedly caught on camera attempting to enter Lohan's home, tells E! that Lee voluntarily turned herself in to police last Friday, Sept. 18, after hearing the accusations being made against her.

However, not everyone is buying the stories being told in the press. Kelsey Schluter, a friend of Prugo's, took to her Facebook after hearing about both arrests. "You don't know the facts. Lindsay, Nick, and Rachel are all friends," claims Schluter. "It was an inside job. A safe was never stolen."

As of today, the LAPD was unable to confirm that Lee had turned herself over to authorities. An official statement is expected on Monday.

George Michael Arrested For Yet Another Car Snafu

George Michael AP Photo/Max Nash-pa

Someone needs to revoke George Michael's license...for good.

Fresh off of his two-year driving ban, the singer was arrested Friday on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol after a London car crash, says the BBC.

A spokeswoman for the Thames Valley Police confirms that Michael was taken into police custody for nearly five hours. "He was later released without charge," she added.

Michael's Land Rover was left mangled after colliding with a seven-ton truck around 1 a.m. After the accident, the other driver, Laurie Rowe, told the U.K.'s Daily Mirror: "Michael seemed completely disoriented, like he had no idea what was going on." Rowe continued: "He looked totally dazed and even tried to climb into the cab of my [truck]."

Rowe recalled seeing Michael's car weaving across the highway in his rear view mirror before the impact: "When I...got out to see what had happened, I didn't think he would have survived."

Michael has been arrested for a multitude of offenses over the past few years, most recently in 2007, when the singer was found slumped over the wheel of his car with a veritable "cocktail of drugs" in his system.

Michael Douglas "Devastated" by Son's Drug Bust

Cameron Douglas, Michael Douglas Eric Charbonneau/Le Studio/Getty Images

After nearly a week of silence, Michael Douglas and Diandra Douglas are speaking out about son Cameron Douglas' arrest.

The legendary actor's spokesperson released a statement on Wednesday, saying: "The family is devastated and very disappointed in Cameron's recent behavior," reports People.  It continues: "Any family who has dealt with substance abuse knows how devastating it can be."

Unfortunately for the Douglas', things don't seem to be looking up anytime soon. Cameron is now being held the Metropolitan Correctional Center after girlfriend Kelly Sott attempted to bring him an heroin-filled electric toothbrush, at his behest. Sott is now charged with drug smuggling and being held without bail.

If convicted on the drug-trafficking charges, Douglas faces a minumum of ten years in prison, with a possible life sentence.
