"Scream" Strands Leo's "Beach"
Despite business dropping off 53 percent from last week, Miramax's scare flick also buried Snow Day and tamed The Tigger Movie to remain the nation's No. 1 movie for a second week.
According to box-office estimates, the horror-comedy sequel earned an estimated $16.4 million and has now racked up a $57 million gross.
Meanwhile, Leonardo DiCaprio's The Beach did some un-Titanic-like business, premiering with an estimated $15 million. The movie was plagued by poor reviews and a not-so-cute, R-rated scenario unsuitable for the teenage girls still gaga over Leo. Fox's only consolation was that the paradise-gone-bad flick had a per-screen average of $5,892, the highest in the Top 10.
However, it wasn't much better than Paramount's kiddie comedy Snow Day, which debuted with a per-screen average of $5,556 to earn an estimated $14.8 million in third place.
In fourth was another new movie, the Winnie the Pooh sidekick cartoon The Tigger Movie, which earned Disney $9.2 million.
Several mainstays filled out the Top 10, including the wee-mouse movie Stuart Little, which has now grossed $132 million in nine weeks (enough to guarantee a sequel), and Ashley Judd's thriller Eye of the Beholder, which managed to hang in at 10th despite a huge drop-off from the previous week and, with just $2.1 million earned this weekend, a gross of only $15.1 million in three weeks.
Here is a rundown of the weekend's Top 10, according to estimates by Exhibitor Relations:
1. Scream 3, $16.4 million
2. The Beach, $15 million
3. Snow Day, $14.8 million
4. The Tigger Movie, $9.2 million
5. The Hurricane, $3.6 million
6. The Green Mile, $3 million
7. Next Friday, $2.8 million
8. Stuart Little, $2.7 million
9. Galaxy Quest, $2.2 million
10. Eye of the Beholder, $2.1 million
