Hot-buttered opinion on the latest flicks

Some fares just ain't fair. Like when cab driver Jamie Foxx picks up Tom Cruise, a hit man with a busy night ahead of him. The two form an uneasy partnership when Cruise forces Foxx to drive him around town to the various stops on his murderous tour of Los Angeles. But the real guy in control here is director Michael Mann, who meditates on long, beautiful shots of late-night L. A., explores the colorfully seedier sides of town and, thankfully, doesn't let the inevitable showdown fall for (too many) blockbuster contrivances. Cruise packs plenty of heat playing the self-centered, philosophy-filled A-hole (he's just acting, right?), and it's a pleasure to see him not be the hero. Meanwhile, this serious side of Foxx leaves you looking at him in a new light (and hopeful about his starring role in the upcoming Ray Charles biopic Ray). It's a perfect hit.
