Nobody ever said, "The film's the thing." Which may help explain why plays transferred to the big screen often lose a lot in the translation. Not here, however, where Terrence McNally's charming, touching tale of gay brotherhood is enhanced by director Mantello's opening-up of the action to avoid the typical boxed-in claustrophobia. The story is simple: seven (later eight) friends meet at a country house three times one summer where we (and they) discover things about each other.
Amusing, poignant and smartly acted, this is a small story, well told. And thanks to Mantello, cinematographer Alik Sakharov and production designer Francois Seguin, it's also beautiful to behold.
