Castle, which premieres tonight at 10 on ABC following Dancing With the Stars, is a joyride through New York City crime scenes led by author and player extraordinaire Rick Castle. A mystery author looking for new material, he gets himself paired with tough girl detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic). And with that, cuteness and crime-solving ensues.
But here's what Captain Tightpants has to say for himself...
The first thing you need to know is that Richard Castle is a fun guy, silly but sympathetic. He's like a soft-serve version of Captain Reynolds/Hammer—sweet and delicious, without the heavy aftertaste. Nathan tells us, "He's having a lot of fun. He is vain; he is into himself. He doesn't feel a tremendous amount of responsibility. He's just thrilled to be with an actual homicide detective, whom he finds to be an incredibly interesting character—and on whom he's going to base a new character in his new novel."
His one obsession is story. He loves a good mystery and that's why he loves his new job, but when he's on the case with N.Y. detective Kate Beckett, he only gets part of the mystery. Says Nathan, "The ending is the murder. Castle wants the beginning. He is fascinated by story—that's what drives him. We're all driven by something different, and for him it's the story. 'Wow, did you see the way that woman was frozen there? Who freezes somebody?' He wants to know the beginning to that story that is the murder."
But running cases with Kate Beckett is more than just following clues—there's also some chemistry as his easy-going, self-important style clashes with her hard-driving investigative technique. Fillion suggests that the chemistry comes from the clash of their different approaches to life. He says, "Richard Castle is not a man who's experienced a lot of tragedy—he's experienced success. But Kate Beckett's cut from a very different cloth, and because of that he is incredibly...not only interested, not only enamored, but fascinated by her. She's incredibly different from him. She's driven by personal tragedy and has a need to find justice, whereas Castle just thinks it's fun."
