Big Brother sees and hears all...and airs it, too.
The CBS reality hit's 15th season is already becoming one of the series' most talked-about ever after several of the housemates were overheard using racial and homophobic slurs during the program's 24-hour live feeds on CBS.com, causing some fans to start a petition asking CBS to expel contestant Aaryn Gries.
Well, Gries wasn't ousted during Sunday's episode of Big Brother (she was head of household in fact), but her negative remarks were exposed to viewers, with producers choosing to air an entire montage of the former model's worst comments.
During the episode, Gries is overheard making racist comments about fellow contestant Helen Kim, saying she should "go make rice," and later saying, "I probably look like a squinty Asian right now." She later mocked Asian nail salon workers, saying, "Why you no have boyfriend? It's because you don't want long nail!"
Gries also said how "no one's going to vote for whoever that queer puts up" while addressing gay housemate Andy Herren.
Gries' remarks didn't go unnoticed by her fellow competitors: Howard Overby, an African-American contestant, said, "Even when these comments are made in fun, they're still hurtful and are disrespectful," while Judd Daughtery added, "Does she know we're on TV and you shouldn't say stuff like that?"
After fans expressed outrage over Gries and the other houseguests' use of racial slurs, CBS released a statement saying their remarks were "not condoned" by the network.
"Big Brother is a reality show about watching a group of people who have no privacy 24/7 -- and seeing every moment of their lives," the statement reads. "At times, the houseguests reveal prejudices and other beliefs that we do not condone. We certainly find the statements made by several of the houseguests on the live Internet feed to be offensive. Any views or opinions expressed in personal commentary by a houseguest appearing on Big Brother, either on any live feed from the House or during the broadcast, are those of the individual(s) speaking and do not represent the views or opinions of CBS or the producers of the program."
But CBS and fans aren't the only ones upset with Gries: Zephyr Talent, her modeling agency, recently announced they were dropping her as a client.
"Aaryn, season 15 cast member of Big Brother, revealed prejudices and other beliefs that we do not condone," reads the statement posted on Zephyr Talent's Facebook page. "We certainly find the statements made by Aaryn on the live Internet feed to be offensive. Any views or opinions expressed in personal commentary by Aaryn, either on any live feed from the House or during the broadcast, are hers alone and do not represent the views or opinions of Zephyr Talent. Upon much consideration, we have decided to release Aaryn from her contract with Zephyr Talent."
GinaMarie Zimmerman, another houseguest, was also fired from her job for comments she was overheard making on the livefeed, saying African-American contestant Candice Stewart was on the dark side "because she's already dark."
